Today was Oscar's Hatsu Zekku, his first Kodomo No Hi (Children's Day). We celebrated with Yuko and my mom and Oscar's Uncle Sam from Montreal. Oscar has had a bit of a fever for the past few days so he's been sick and annoyed and complainy lately, but he was really good tonight. I think he likes company. He gives us a much harder time when no-one's around. Come visit! His Grandma makes him laugh really hard, just like his Obaachan in Japan.
We had a huge feast with sashimi, chicken, smoked salmon salad, and traditional holiday food like red beans and rice and kashiwa-mochi. After dinner, Wakaba and Yuko folded up newspapers to make Kabuto helmets for us to wear and Oscar got a few little gifts from the dollar store. Tomorrow we have to take down the Koi flags from outside the house, because Wakaba says in her hometown everyone takes them down right after May 5th, even though Yuko says we can keep them up longer.
